A Visit to the Wirral to see the potential site of the Battle of Brunanburh – Hosted by the Wirral Archaeology Group – this Thursday 12th October

Dear Battle of Hatfield Supporters,

FUTURE DIRECTION ?

We believe that our short/medium focus should be to excite other parties (HLF, Universities etc..) to offer free professional help / funding.

All societies have a, ‘shelf life’ and we are determined to make real progress in the next 2 years to avoid reduction in interest.

We don’t believe that a new HLF bid is yet appropriate as we need to better understand what we need to ask for.

An unfocussed (& potentially accepted !) bid could cause huge damage – ie. poor results from funding & exclusion of the possibility of another future bid.

EVENTS

We are spending a fact finding day with the Wirral Archaeology CIC group (“WAG”) (Brunanburh (937 AD) on the Wirral (12th Oct.) because :

1/ They are also looking for a battle field and have discovered some 2,000 items but probably from a post battle re-processing area.

2/ Perhaps this critical mass of items has helped Liverpool University etc.. become freely involved & this could also help persuade future HLF funding

3/ To understand the soil types / depths of artefact recovery /cropped areas impact on finds depth

4/ To try to understand more about battle related funerary practices

5/ To understand their current HLF funding and future bids considering the c. 2,000 finds.

Note : Pete Jenkins (WAG) – has invited Dr. Clare Downham and Professor Stephen Harding (they haven’t accepted yet)

If anyone else would like to attend then we can provide directions you will probably have to make your own journey arrangements.

Please let me know asap in order for us to let the WAG know of the numbers attending.

Note : We will be having our AGM in December 2023 – details to follow in the next few weeks.

Regards,

From All The Team
